Overview:
Understanding how to access, process, and visualize climate data is essential for addressing the growing challenges of climate change. Ensuring climate data quality through cleaning – such as handling missing values, detecting errors, and standardizing formats – is crucial. Transforming the data by resampling, scaling, and deriving new variables allows for more meaningful insights. Furthermore, statistical techniques like trend analysis, seasonality detection, and anomaly identification are indispensable for interpreting climate patterns and changes.
This module emphasized the importance of data visualization for communicating insights effectively. Tools like Excel, R, Python, and GIS are indispensable for creating clear and accessible visual representations of climate data. Selecting the right visualizations, utilizing appropriate colour palettes, and ensuring clarity through titles, labels, and annotations are key to making complex climate data understandable and actionable. We guide you through various types of climate data, such as temperature, precipitation, wind, and major sources like meteorological stations and satellites. By the end of this module, you will have the skills to confidently access, analyze, and visualize climate data, enabling you to interpret complex datasets and support informed decisions on climate adaptation and mitigation. Practical case studies and examples will help you apply these concepts in real-world scenarios. Mastering these techniques allows to access, process, analyze, and visualize climate data, enabling informed decision-making and the development of strategies to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change. The full module should take around 50 minutes, comprising the roadmap and the quizzes. Furthermore, each exercise should take around 20 minutes to complete.

Andreas Hoy
Andreas Hoy is a Senior Expert at the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) in Tallinn, Estonia. He holds a Ph.D. in geoecology with a specialization in climatology and has more than 15 years of experience in climate analysis, risk assessment and adaptation research. His scientific interests include the study of extreme weather and climate events, urban climatology and innovative approaches to visualizing and communicating climate data for decision-making. He has led and contributed to numerous international and EU-funded projects and co-authored a wide range of scientific and applied studies. A central focus of his work is bridging the gap between climate science and practice, making complex data accessible and actionable for policymakers, practitioners and communities. In his teaching, he emphasizes curiosity and hands-on learning, helping others to turn climate data into meaningful insights for resilience and sustainability.
