Overview:
This module has an estimated total duration of 30 minutes, comprising 20 minutes for the instructional roadmap and 10 minutes for the final quiz. It begins by introducing the concepts of extreme events and climate hazards, with a distinction between chronic and acute hazards. The content then focuses on specific types of hazards such as heatwaves, droughts, floods, heavy rainfall, and wildfires, while also covering more complex phenomena like compound events and weather whiplash. The module then explores the role of climate indicators as proxies for identifying and understanding climate hazards. It provides an overview of key global, EU, and national-level atlases, tools, and databases for data visualization and download. The module concludes with an in-depth example of the European Extreme Events Climate Index (E3CI), a platform specifically designed for consulting climate hazard data across various geographic scales. Throughout the module, videos and additional sources are provided to deepen understanding. A final quiz ensures comprehension of the material, testing knowledge on the different hazards, concepts, and tools introduced.

Davide Dansero

Davide Dansero is a researcher at the CMCC Foundation, where his work focuses on the social impacts of climate change and natural hazards, with a particular interest in the interplay between human and physical geography applied to climate change. In March 2024, he earned a master’s degree in Environmental, Cultural, and Territorial Economics through a joint programme at the University of Turin and the Polytechnic University of Turin.
