Overview:
This module is dedicated to exploring the risks that climate change poses to society. It starts by clarifying what risk is, by looking at how the main institutions and scientific organizations like IPCC and UNDRR define it. It then focuses on the EUCRA report, which discusses the main climate risks in Europe by sector and the urgency of action. Subsequently, the module talks about some of the most common ways of addressing climate risk, focusing on risk as a product of hazard, exposure and vulnerability. It then provides some useful links to databases and tools for risk, exposure and vulnerability visualization and analysis. Lastly, it introduces the concept of resilience as a systemic approach to climate adaptation. The course should last around 20 minutes, considering also the final quizzes.

Nicola Loglisci

Nicola Loglisci is a researcher at the CIMA Foundation (Savona, Italy). His work focuses on the application of citizen science approaches to meteorology and climate change, with the aim of fostering collaboration between science and society
Davide Dansero
Davide Dansero is a researcher at the CMCC Foundation, where his work focuses on the social impacts of climate change and natural hazards, with a particular interest in the interplay between human and physical geography applied to climate change. In March 2024, he earned a master’s degree in Environmental, Cultural, and Territorial Economics through a joint programme at the University of Turin and the Polytechnic University of Turin.
Alfredo Reder
Alfredo Reder is a Civil Engineer with a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering. He joined the CMCC Foundation in 2015 and has been leading the “Adaptation Engineering” unit within the REMHI division of the ICR since 2025. Previously, he supervised the “Urban Risk and Adaptation” unit. He holds key responsibilities in several European and national projects and serves as the CMCC scientific coordinator for many of them. Alfredo is a co-lead author of the Built Environment chapter of EUCRA and is actively involved in the Working Group on Climate Change Adaptation, with a focus on structural design. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles in SCOPUS- and Web of Science-indexed journals and has presented at multiple international conferences. His expertise includes the impacts of climate change on physical hazards, risk and resilience assessment for buildings and infrastructure, the use of Copernicus Climate Data Store (CDS) products, uncertainty propagation in climate models, and weather-induced landslides.
